Professional Philosophy & Interests

E-mail Print PDF

As a Human Technology Interaction (HTI) engineer I have a professional background in both social and technology sciences. In addition I have a strong personal affinity with ICT and network administration. My expertise lies in the triangulation of these fields which reflects in my professional philosophy. I believe that knowledge of technology combined with the acquaintance with human factors gives an engineer that little "extra". It enables an easy transformation from client's "problems" into technological solutions for instance. Such insights into how people work, think and act are also imperative to be able to successfully develop technology that fits the end-users needs and abilities. This is especially important in modern society, where businesses can not solely rely on technology-determinism anymore, but have to offer excellence on all levels in order to competitively stand out.

Currently I am researching: Parental mediation of children's digital game behavior, in my pursue for a PhD at the TU/e. My general professional interests furthermore include, but are not limited to:

  • Human Computer Interaction (HCI) / Usability engineering,
  • Mechatronics / Domotica / CAD,
  • Network administration / web development.

Please visit the portfolio and publication list sections, and feel free to contact me for questions or to discuss my work!

Professional career

After working in ICT-service and system administration as a student side-job, Willem Oosting started his professional career as a web-developer. He used open source CMS solutions to create user friendly company websites (e.g. Magnaview). Subsequently he worked as a usability researcher within the European vip-LAB project to enhance telemedicine systems from a user centered perspective. However, his scientific interests in human behavior and computer science made him return to academics and he became a scholar within the Game Experience LAB at the TU/e where he is currently studying parental mediation on children's gaming behavior for the European Games At Large project in his pursue for a doctorate.

Education

Willem Oosting holds a BSc in mechatronical engineering from Fontys UPE (2001) and a MSc degree in Human Technology Interaction from the TU/e (2006). He engaged in various CAD and software development projects within the field of robotics as an undergraduate student. Subsequently he he was involved in various perception and cognition projects on a more theoretical level (e.g.: quantification of 3d viewing experience and transferability of visual feedback on exponential growth estimations). His Human Technology Interaction master’s thesis focused on appliance of non-stereoscopic 3d cues in a virtual window to elicit a 'see through experience' which got published in Presence (MIT) after a revision by his supervisor.
